Greek Media: Citizens vote for the best manager
The left-wing press is looking for reasons for the failure of Syriza's elections.
A day after the conservative Nea Dimokratia (ND) party won parliamentary elections, Greek media analyzed the election results in a shocking light. "There is no longer any ideological taboo - citizens elect the best manager, regardless of ideology and political orientation," wrote the conservative daily Kathimerini.
Previous Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his ND were able to consolidate 40.8 votes and thus perform better than in 2019 (39.9 percent). The largest left opposition party SYRIZA and its party leader Alexis Tsipras fell more than 11 percentage points to 20 percent.
"Yesterday, the majority of voters approved sweeping reforms," continued Cathimerini. Mitsotakis now had a historic opportunity to reform the country. The danger is not small - especially given the weak opposition.
"Who has Tsipras on his conscience?"
The left-wing press began looking for reasons for the electoral defeat. "Who has Alexis Tsipras' conscience?" the headline of the Syriza-affiliated Contra News newspaper. He pointed to major blunders in the election campaign, including one Syriza politician who, in an interview just four days before the election, suddenly spoke of a massive increase in taxes and fees for the self-employed.
"Avgi" newspaper, which is seen as a spokesman for Syriza, quoted Tsipras, who announced changes to the upcoming election campaign ahead of the election.
Because Greece will have to vote again in late June or early July, despite a decisive victory from the Conservatives. Mitsotakis won 145 seats in the 300-seat parliament, but not an absolute majority.
At the next election, a special feature of Greece's electoral law will come into effect, which will likely secure power for the ND: The strongest party will then automatically receive at least 20 seats in parliament, allowing the ND to govern another legislature. period only if one is performing well.
